The story of the 8000 Base Camp Challenge begins long before it had a name. Many years ago, on my first big trip overseas, I spent the summer backpacking through India and Nepal. In northern India, I embarked on my first high-altitude trek—a month-long adventure that took me from Srinagar in Kashmir to Leh in Ladakh. This journey led me through rugged mountain landscapes, over a snowy 5,700-metre pass, across freezing glacier-fed rivers, and to remote, centuries-old Tibetan monasteries perched on sheer cliffsides.
This was before smartphones and the internet; we were truly off the grid. Upon returning home to Canada months later, I carried with me a profound appreciation for the vastness and extraordinary beauty of the world. That journey ignited a lifelong passion for mountain trekking that has never faded.
Since then, I’ve been fortunate to explore high places across the globe—from climbing Indonesian volcanoes like Mt. Tambora (2,722 m) to standing atop Mt. Kilimanjaro (5,895 m), the roof of Africa. One of my most meaningful mountain trekking experiences was with my daughter, celebrating her university graduation by hiking to Everest Base Camp in Nepal (5,364 m)—our first 8,000 meter base camp. Because it also serves as the base camp for Lhotse, we came home with two 8,000 m base camps under our belts.
After completing several more 8,000 m base camp treks—Annapurna I, Manaslu, Broad Peak, and K2—a crazy thought suddenly struck me one day.
What if I tried to attempt all fourteen 8,000 m base camps?
That spark became the foundation for something bigger.
Inspired by iconic mountaineering challenges like the Seven Summits and the 14 Peaks, the goal of the 8000 Base Camp Challenge is to foster a global community of mountain trekking enthusiasts who share the aspiration to reach all fourteen 8,000 m base camps.
