Trek Overview

The journey to Annapurna I, the world's tenth-highest mountain and one of the most dangerous peaks for mountaineers to climb, offers one of Nepal's most popular trekking experiences. Annapurna I's South Base Camp trek is a classic Himalayan adventure that takes you into the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary, a spectacular mountain amphitheater. This trek offers incredible mountain scenery, diverse landscapes, and rich cultural experiences.


Annapurna I's North Base Camp (~4,190 m), located several kilometres away, is used primarily by climbing expeditions.

  • Starting Point: Nayapul or Phedi, Nepal
  • Total trekking distance (return): ~120 km

What to Expect

This trek is one of Nepal’s most rewarding adventures, offering spectacular mountain views along the way. You’ll walk through terraced farmlands, rhododendron forests, and bamboo groves before entering the high‑altitude landscapes of the Annapurna Sanctuary. The amphitheater of peaks surrounding the base camp creates an awe‑inspiring natural cathedral. With its well‑developed trail infrastructure and comfortable teahouses, this route is suitable for trekkers of varying experience levels. 

Example 13-Day Itinerary (start/end Kathmandu, Nepal)

  • Day 1: Drive/fly Kathmandu (~1,400 m) → Pokhara (~900 m)
  • Day 2: Drive Pokhara → Nayapul (~1,070 m) → Trek to Tikhedhunga (~1,540 m)
  • Day 3: Tikhedhunga → Ghorepani (~2,860 m)
  • Day 4: Ghorepani → Poon Hill (~3,210 m) → Tadapani (~2,630 m)
  • Day 5: Tadapani → Chhomrong (~2,170 m)
  • Day 6: Chhomrong → Bamboo (~2,310 m)
  • Day 7: Bamboo → Deurali (~3,230 m)
  • Day 8: Deurali→ Machhapuchhre Base Camp (~3,700 m) → Annapurna I BC (~4,130 m)
  • Day 9: Annapurna I Base Camp → Bamboo (~2,310 m)
  • Day 10: Bamboo → Jhinu Danda (~1,780 m)
  • Day 11: Jhinu Danda → Pothana (~1,900 m)
  • Day 12: Pothana → Phedi → Drive to Pokhara (~900 m)
  • Day 13: Drive/fly Pokhara → Kathmandu (~1,400 m)
