4. Lhotse Base Camp Trek (Nepal)

Trek Overview

The trek to Lhotse, the world’s fourth‑highest mountain, follows  the same approach route to Everest Base Camp. Lhotse, meaning “South  Peak” in Tibetan, is connected to Everest via a high ridge called the  South Col.  

Key Information

  • Summit elevation: 8,516 m
  • Base camp altitude: 5,364 m
  • Highest trekking point: Kala Patthar look-out (5,545 m)
  • Duration: 12-14 days
  • Difficulty rating: moderate to hard
  • Best time to go: March to May and September to November
  • Starting point: Lukla, Nepal
  • Total trekking distance (return): Approx. 130 km.

Example 12-Day Itinerary (start/end Kathmandu, Nepal)

 (Same as Everest base camp trek approach)


  • Day 1: Fly Kathmandu (1,400 m) to Lukla (2,860 m), trek to Phakding (2,610 m)
  • Day 2: Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m)
  • Day 3: Acclimatization day - Namche Bazaar
  • Day 4: Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3,860 m)
  • Day 5: Tengboche to Dingboche (4,410 m)
  • Day 6: Acclimatization day - Dingboche
  • Day 7: Dingboche to Lobuche (4,940 m)
  • Day 8: Lobuche to Gorak Shep (5,164 m) to Everest BC / Lhotse BC (5,364 m), return to Gorak Shep
  • Day 9: Gorak Shep to Kala Patthar side trip (5,545 m) to Pheriche (4,371 m)
  • Day 10: Pheriche to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m)
  • Day 11: Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2,860 m)
  • Day 12: Fly Lukla to Kathmandu (1,400 m)
